Your guide to Curlew Cottage

Arrival, the woodburner, bins, walks and tides. Read this before you come.

For guests staying at Curlew Cottage. We send your key-safe and wifi details by email before arrival.

Arriving

Getting in

Check-in and the key safe

Check-in is from 4pm. The key safe is on the wall by the front door, beside the boot scraper. We email your arrival details the week before your stay.

Parking

One space on the gravel, through the gate and to the left of the lane. Please park in that space only, so the turning area stays clear.

Wifi

The router is in the hall cupboard. The network name is on the label underneath it. The wifi password comes with your arrival details.

Running late?

If you expect to arrive after 8pm, call us on 01632 960 842 beforehand to check you have the arrival instructions.

In the house

Woodburner, bins and the dog

Lighting the woodburner

Logs are in the basket and firelighters are on the hearth. Open the air vent fully before you light it, and close it down once the logs are burning well. Burn wood only, and keep the glass door shut.

Bins and recycling

General waste goes in the black bin by the gate, collected on Tuesdays. Recycling goes in the blue crate, also collected on Tuesdays. Glass goes to the bottle bank in the harbour car park, a four-minute walk.

Dogs

Dog bags are in the box by the back gate. Bag it and put it in the black bin. The dog bed, bowls and towel are in the hall cupboard. Dogs may use the sofa with the throw on it, not the beds.

Before you walk

Check the tide before you go

The marsh floods. The Marram Walk boardwalk floods in places at high tide, and the causeway at the end of Staithe Lane is under water for about two hours either side of high tide. Read the tide table on the board by the quay before you set out. Do not walk the marsh on a rising tide.

Local walks

Three walks from the front door

Harbour wall loop

One mile round, flat, and step-free on the quay. Start at the end of Staithe Lane and walk out along the wall. Good at low tide and in the evening.

Marram Walk

About two miles there and back over a boardwalk across the salt marsh. Wear boots, and check the tide first. Curlews call here all year.

Chapel Field path

A 20-minute climb to St Ebba’s church, with a view over the whole marsh. The path is grass and can be wet.

Food and drink

Pubs, bakery and the boats

The Lantern Room

The pub on the quay. Food until 9pm, and the kitchen is closed on Mondays. Dogs are welcome in the bar but not in the dining room.

Staithe Bakery

Open from 7:30am, Tuesday to Sunday. The sourdough and cinnamon buns sell out by about 10am. Closed on Mondays.

Seal trips

Gull Point Seal Trips leave from the quay hut, from Easter to October. Book at the hut on the day, when the weather is right.

Leaving

Check-out is by 10am

  • Run the dishwasher before you leave, and put the bins out on Monday night for Tuesday.
  • Shut the woodburner door and close the vent, so the stove is cold by morning.
  • Lock the front and back doors, and put the key back in the key safe.
  • Leave dog towels in the hall cupboard, not on the sofa.
