Week 03

wayfinding critique

pin two, not one

Crit day: the arrows had to go

I pinned up the Route 7 draft and the room went quiet in the wrong way. Ines asked me to point to “you are here” and I couldn’t find it fast. Twelve arrows, no anchor.

What I learned / what I would change

What I learned

A map needs one loud thing, and it should be the reader’s own position.

What I would change

I would pin up two versions, not one. A single draft invites polite comments; two invite a choice.

Week 03

wayfinding research

sit at the back next

Riding Route 7 end to end with a stopwatch

Forty minutes, twenty-two stops. I wrote down every time someone leaned forward to read the stop display. Most of them were looking for a landmark, not a street name.

What I learned / what I would change

What I learned

People navigate by things they can see: the clock tower, the big Co-op, the bridge.

What I would change

I sat at the front. Sitting at the back would have shown me who can’t see the display at all.

Week 02

type drawing

test under evening light

Shelf labels at two metres

I printed the same label at six sizes and taped them to the library shelves. Then I stood at the door with a tape measure and asked six people to read them out.

What I learned / what I would change

What I learned

Weight matters more than size past about a metre. A heavier 28 pt beat a light 36 pt every time.

What I would change

I only tested in daylight. The library’s evening lighting is yellow and dim and probably changes the answer.

Week 02

type research

lowercase!

A morning copying railway lettering

Tracing letters from old station signs in the college archive. Slow, quiet, and better than any video about letter spacing.

What I learned / what I would change

What I learned

Good sign lettering has generous gaps inside the letters, not just between them.

What I would change

I traced only capitals. Lowercase is what people actually read quickly, so trace that next.

Week 01

drawing critique

listen first

First crit, first wobble

Five of us pinned up our memory maps. Mine had the canal in the wrong place entirely. Nobody laughed; they all had something similar.

What I learned / what I would change

What I learned

Everyone’s memory map is distorted the same way: the parts we walk slowly get bigger.

What I would change

I’d ask people to talk me through their maps before I explained mine.

Week 01

drawing wayfinding

red door = landmark

Drawing my walk to college from memory

Day one of the brief: draw the route you take every day without looking at a map. Mine took eleven minutes and had four landmarks and zero street names.

What I learned / what I would change

What I learned

I don’t know the names of the streets I use every day. I know the bakery, the bridge and the red door.

What I would change

I would draw it twice, morning and evening, to see what changes when I’m tired.

Week 04 lands Monday

Seen something I missed? Tell me.
