About
Twelve years of pricing decisions, written down
I am Rosalind Achebe-Thorne. I price software and services for a living, and most of my work ends as a page someone else has to use.
Background
From spreadsheets to pricing reviews
I started in 2014 as a pricing analyst at a support software company, building the models behind its first seat-based plans. Over the next six years I moved from spreadsheets to running pricing reviews across four product lines.
From January 2021 to December 2024 I was head of pricing at Teasel Software. The team of twelve set prices for finance and operations buyers in the UK and Germany, and I owned the plan table, the discount rules and the annual price rise.
I left in 2024 to work with small software companies and agencies, where a pricing change can be tested in a month rather than a quarter.
Approach
Three habits from every session
Start from the buyer’s choice
Before any number changes, I list what a buyer compares and where they stop. Most pricing problems show up there first.
Change one thing you can measure
A limit, a unit or a plan name. One change, one measure, and one date to read the result.
Write the page before the price
If the plan table cannot be explained in two sentences, the price is not ready to publish.
Writing
Most of my writing is for other people to use
A plan table, a pricing page, a board memo that explains a price rise, a sheet a sales team reads on a call. I write those plainly and show the working, so the person who has to use them can check every figure.
- Plan tables and pricing pagesLimits, units and the reason each one sits where it does.
- Memos for boards and finance teamsThe change, the numbers behind it and the risk we are watching.
