Process

From scribble to print file

Four steps for every commission, with a check-in at each one. You see and approve each stage before the next one starts.

Scribble

Send the brief, references and a deadline. You get a short call or a written reply, then rough thumbnails in pencil: three or four layouts, each on one page.

You choose one, or mix two. Nothing is inked until the layout is agreed.

Pencil-style thumbnail layout: a pale panel with a single blue umbrella drawing

Ink

Line art goes down in fineliner on heavy paper and is scanned at 600 dpi. Notes come back on the scan, not in a long email.

The second round fixes lines, faces and anything the layout got wrong.

Inked line drawings of a bicycle, a bell, a leaf and gloves

Colour

Flat sun-yellow and blue are blocked in by hand, then tidied in layers so every colour can be changed on its own.

You see a colour proof. Colour changes at this stage get one round, so they arrive together.

Three coloured jam labels in white, yellow and blue

Deliver

Final files as layered PNG, a print PDF with bleed and web sizes. For a print run, you approve a press proof before the run starts.

Each file comes with a short note on what it is for, so nothing gets printed at the wrong size.
