About
A pen, a sketchbook and a lot of yellow
Scrawl is one illustrator at a desk above a bakery in Tollbridge, drawing for people who need a picture to do a job.
About the desk
Marlo started on gig posters for friends' bands in 2012. Picture books came next, then labels for a jam maker who wanted every jar to look like a small story. Since 2014 the work has been commissions, most of them printed.
Clients tend to be publishers, small makers and people with a single good idea they want on paper. The work is slow in the right places: pencil first, ink once the layout is agreed, colour last.
- Fineliner 0.3
- Black, for every line that needs to hold
- Gouache
- Sun-yellow and blue, the two that do most of the work
- Heavy cartridge
- Smooth enough for ink, rough enough for pencil
- A scanner
- It gets a clean run every Thursday and a stern word otherwise
