Aiko Brennan
The owner. Knows your order, keeps an eye on the siphon and believes a second cup is a perfectly good afternoon plan.
The house
A wood-panelled room for unhurried coffee, loud-ish jazz and people who would rather read than scroll.
Get directionsAiko Brennan opened Yūgure in 2011 after a winter spent sitting in the coffee houses of her mother's home town, where the owner knew everyone's order and nobody hurried you out.
Her brother Tom built the counter from a reclaimed school gym floor. Fifteen years on, the siphons still bubble on halogen burners, the menu still fits on one board, and the record shelf has quietly taken over the back wall.
Behind the counter
The owner. Knows your order, keeps an eye on the siphon and believes a second cup is a perfectly good afternoon plan.
Aiko’s brother. Built the counter, wired the hi-fi and keeps the record sleeves in order. Requests are taken on a ticket, never shouted across the room.
On the hi-fi
Requests are taken at the counter, written on a ticket and played in order. Side B counts as a new request.

Your usual is waiting
No need to reserve for daytime coffee. Find the little orange sun on Lanthorn Street, pull up a stool and let the kettle do its thing.
