About Nell.
I write features about the places people work and live, mostly for magazines and weekly papers. Before this I spent nine years on a daily newspaper’s local desk, where I learned to count council minutes and to ask the question nobody wants to answer.
I like a story that takes a season to report. I will spend time on a shift, in a kitchen or in a council gallery before I write a line, and I expect to change my mind about the story at least twice.
What I cover
- WorkShifts, pay, training and the people who keep operations running
- HousingTenancies, repairs and the records that decide who is believed
- CareHome care, helplines and the unpaid time around them
- Local governmentBudgets, consultations and the forms that sit between them
How I work with editors
A short call to test the idea against what you already run. If it fits, I send a costed plan with dates.
Reporting in agreed stages. You get a note after each one, so nothing lands on the desk as a surprise.
A first draft, then a second with your cuts applied, and a fact-check file with every source named.
