In memory of

Hazel Marrin

14 March 1941 to 2 August 2026

She taught half of Ashby Fold to read, ran its library for twenty-five years and never lost at cards on a Thursday. This page holds the service, her life story and the memories people have sent us.

Four moments

Eighty-five years, nearly all of them within a short walk of Mill Street.

  1. 1941

Born above the bakery on Mill Street, the middle of three children. She could read before she started school.

  2. 1972

Married Peter Marrin, a joiner who made every shelf in the house on Orchard Row. They had two children and five grandchildren.

  3. 1979

Took charge of the Ashby Fold library after years as an assistant, and ran it until she retired in 2004.

  4. 2026

Spent her last summer in the garden with the radio on. She died at home on 2 August, with Anne and Tom beside her.

What people remember

“She lent me a library book when I was nine and asked what I thought of it when I was thirty. I still owe her the answer.”

Ruth Ellery, neighbour on Mill Street
