Teachers

Three makers, one studio each.

Each maker teaches the same group for the whole week, so you get to know their hands as well as their instructions.

Clay studio

Ruth Ashdown

Ruth made pots for a decade before she started teaching them. She runs the kilns at Lowfield and hand-builds everything she shows you first.

  • Pinch pots, coil vessels and slab boxes
  • Glazing with three clays from the valley

Drawing studio

Idris Vane

Idris paints the hedgerows he walks past every day. He teaches looking first, then mixing, and never starts with a finished picture.

  • Drawing with pencil from life
  • Transparent watercolour, wet on wet and glazes

Dye house

Yara Tallis

Yara has run a small dye house for eight years. She works with plants from the farm and cloth from mills within a day of the valley.

  • Natural dye with madder, onion skin and indigo-free blues
  • Block printing on cotton and linen
