Pricing an editorial illustration
Editorial fees are set by where the image runs and how big it is, not by how long it took you. Start from the size, then adjust for use, speed and changes.
1. Start from the size on the page
Floors members reported for UK print magazines and newspapers this year. Below them, say no or offer a smaller use.
2. Adjust for the use
- Paid ads using the image: add 30%. The publication's own social posts are usually included.
- Syndication to sister titles: add 25% per title, or 50% for a whole group.
- Books, calendars or merchandise: a new licence and a new fee.
- Exclusivity for a year: add 20%.
3. Adjust for speed
Under five working days from brief to final, add 25%. Under 48 hours, add 50%. Put the deadline in the quote so the rush fee is tied to it.
4. A worked example
A national weekly wants a half page, print and online, in four working days, plus one paid social ad. £450, plus 25% rush (£112.50), plus 30% for the ad (£135): quote £697.50, or £700.
